The Student Life Office and Honors Program welcome students to participate in the Student Leadership Development Series this fall semester. 

As an Honors student, Student Life Ambassador, SGA officer, or as a participating student of a recognized student club or organization, you are already making a difference at Northern Virginia Community College. The Student Leadership Development Series is designed to elevate your leadership journey with the tools, training, and recognition you deserve.

The Student Leadership Development Series will challenge and support you as you:

  • Strengthen your leadership identity
  • Gain practical skills in communication, conflict resolution, and professionalism
  • Reflect on your personal values, goals, and vision as a leader
  • Build a portfolio of experience that sets you apart for transfer and career opportunities

 

Requirements:

Participating students must be in good standing, and with a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.25. To successfully complete the program in the Fall 2025, students must complete the following:

  • Attend a minimum of four workshops available in the fall
  • Three of these workshops should be hosted by Student Life and Honors
  • Students  can participate in another extracurricular training session provided by NOVA or NVCC staff as completion of one of the four required workshops
  • Complete and submit a Student Leadership project.

All NOVA students are welcome, however, to receive documentation of completion, please sign up here no later than Sept 5th and fulfill the requirements listed in the Series Description during the fall term.
If you already signed up, thank you! If you haven’t, please sign even if you are not able to attend the kickoff retreat on September 12th, or if you are not sure whether you can attend most of the workshops. !

  • Life Styles and Leaderships Workshop

Description: Explore the Life Styles Inventory (LSI) to understand your thinking and behaviors patterns.

Date: Friday, Sept 12th. 10:30am - 12pm

  • Priorities and Values Workshop

Description: Equips student leaders with practical communication skills to foster clarity, active listening, and respectful dialogue in leadership roles.

  • Emotional Intelligence Workshop

Description: introduces student leaders to the fundamentals of emotional intelligence, focusing on self-awareness, empathy, and relationship skills.

  • Communication Skills Workshop

Description: Equips student leaders with practical communication skills to foster clarity, active listening, and respectful dialogue in leadership roles.

  • Research in the Honors Program 

Description: A guide through the essentials of Honors research, highlighting strategies for selecting topics, conducting scholarly inquiry, and presenting findings with impact.

  • Conflict resolution for Student Leaders

Description: Introduction to effective conflict resolution strategies, emphasizing communication, collaboration, and problem-solving skills to manage challenges constructively.

Date: Wednesday, October 22nd. 1pm - 2:30pm. 

Presenter: Audrey Williams from Mason’s School of Conflict Resolution. She has requested that we move to 1 pm or 3 pm to accommodate her teaching schedule

Description: Develop professionalism skills, focusing on accountability, reliability, and effective representation of themselves and their organizations.
