Burnout can happen when your personal and professional commitments become more overwhelming than rewarding. It is the state of physical, emotional, and mental exhaustion due to things like excessive work, demanding deadlines, lack of support, and the absence of boundaries. Burnout can affect your wellbeing, performance, outlook on life, and overall happiness.

There are many things you can do to help alleviate and prevent burnout. Some of which include:

  1. Prioritize Sleep: It is important to aim for 7-9 hours of sleep to get adequate rest. The quality of that rest can be influenced by your wind-down routine, consistency, and the amount of screen time before bed.
  2. Nourish your Body: In order to keep up with your commitments, your body has to feel strong and healthy. Preparing your food in advance, smart snacking, and substituting nutrient-dense foods helps support things like your mood, energy levels, brain health, and gut health.
  3. Move your Body: It is vital to move your body even if it is just for a few minutes a day. Your movement for the day can include simple things like quick walks on your lunchbreak, morning stretches, and taking the stairs.
  4. Set Boundaries: Setting boundaries means understanding your limits and finding  ways to make your workload manageable. Taking a personal day, saying “no” to things that can overwhelm your plate, paying attention to your needs, and making time for nonwork related things are great ways to set boundaries.

These are actions you can take to help combat burnout. Remember, self-care is no longer a luxury, it is a requirement. Get started today!
