A new semester brings a fresh start with new classes, goals, and opportunities. While the beginning of the semester can be exciting, it can also feel overwhelming as you adjust to changing schedules, assignments, work, and everything else competing for your attention.
One of the best ways to set yourself up for a successful semester is to make self-care part of your routine from the beginning. Self-care does not have to mean elaborate routines or taking hours away from your responsibilities. Sometimes, it simply means paying attention to what you need so you can continue showing up for yourself, your classes, and your goals.Start with a routine that works for you. Review your course schedules and important deadlines, but don't forget to schedule time for meals, sleep, exercise, hobbies, friends, family, and downtime.
Take care of the basics. When schedules get busy, basic needs are often the first things students sacrifice. However, sleep, nutrition, movement, and rest can all affect your ability to concentrate, manage stress, and stay motivated.
As the semester gets underway, check in with yourself:
-
Are you getting enough sleep?
-
Are you eating regularly throughout the day?
-
Are you taking breaks during long periods of studying?
-
Are you making time for activities you enjoy?
-
Are you giving yourself opportunities to connect with other people?
You don't have to do everything perfectly. The goal is to notice when something feels out of balance and make adjustments when you can.
Make connection part of your self-care. Self-care isn't always something you do alone. Connecting with other students and becoming involved in the NOVA community can be an important part of feeling supported and connected throughout the semester.
