Building confidence isn’t a one-time achievement—it’s a continuous process that needs consistent attention and care. It grows naturally as you dedicate time, energy, and effort to your personal development. True confidence comes from reshaping your mind through learning, intentional habits, a healthier mindset, and a more supportive inner dialogue.
NOVA Online and The Office of Wellness and Mental Health recently offered a Confidence Building Workshop through the Virtual Student Union. While there are many ways to boost one’s confidence, these are the key areas the workshop explored:
- Fostering self-compassion means treating yourself with kindness and paying close attention to your inner dialogue. It’s easy to dwell on what you don’t favor about yourself, but growth comes from also recognizing and appreciating your strengths. By reshaping your inner dialogue and letting go of thoughts that don’t support your goals or well-being, you create space for a more positive and empowering mindset.
- Setting realistic short- and long-term goals can set you up not only for success but help with discipline and consistency. Be willing to adjust your goals when needed. Achieving them builds confidence and strengthens your trust in yourself, while setting unrealistic expectations can lead to discouragement and a loss of motivation. As you are working towards your goals, take time to celebrate your progress and even the smallest of wins have value.
- Prioritizing wellness by engaging in physical activities you enjoy to help build strength, manage stress, and declutter the mind. Nourish yourself with balanced, nutritious meals that support the connection between your mind and body, and other important bodily functions. Make sleep a priority, as it plays a key role in restoration for both your physical and mental health. Incorporate deep breathing practices to promote mindfulness, recalibrate the nervous system, and reduce stress levels.
- Creating a supportive network by surrounding yourself with people who uplift you, inspire you, and most importantly encourage you to keep moving forward towards your goals and dreams. The people in your circle can have an impact on your view of yourself, the world, and the progress you’ve made.
- Identifying your strengths and talents starts with paying attention to what feels natural to you—those skills or abilities that energize rather than drain you. Take time to reflect on moments when you’ve felt confident, capable, or proud of yourself, as these often point to your core strengths. Spend time discovering what genuinely brings you joy. Notice the activities that make you lose track of time or leave you feeling fulfilled and recharged.Once you’ve identified both your strengths and talents, make a conscious effort to invest time learning and developing these further.
We hope you find this information helpful and we encourage you to continue learning about ways to build your confidence! Remember, we’re all working on our confidence and it’s about finding what works for you. Give yourself time to grow and enjoy the process!
