Do you ever wonder if you’re studying the right way or practicing active learning in your courses?  If yes, we encourage you to read this blog post and learn more about different strategies that can support your learning.

Here are some strategies to consider:

  • Create a Schedule: It is important to plan ahead and mark your calendar with key dates for exams, assignments, and most importantly time for studying. To achieve learning, you must be intentional about allocating time for you to review and understand the material.
  • Design an Effective Study Plan: No matter the subject, it is important to maximize your study time with study breaks and a manageable workload. You can try the Pomodoro Technique that incorporates a 25-minute work period and  a 5-minute break period. As for the workload, the key is to break larger tasks into smaller tasks and to switch subjects periodically to encourage continuous energy and focus.
  • Exercise Active Learning Strategies: Reading the material or study notes can be helpful, but there are other activities that can help retain the information. This includes rewriting handwritten notes, making practice problems, explaining the concepts out loud, and teaching the material to another person.
  • Designing a Work Environment: It is important to design a study workspace that minimizes distractions, encourages single tasking, and enables focus time. When you switch tasks, your brain requires time and energy to refocus. By creating an effective workspace that fosters single tasking, you preserve mental energy and minimize mental clutter that can affect your stress levels.
If you like what you learned, we encourage you to attend one of the Hack Your Brain: Techniques for Effective Learning workshops that is offered each semester by the Academic Success Center.
