Résumé FAQ
What is a résumé and why do I need one?
A résumé is a document highlighting your professional experience, education, skills, and accomplishments. A résumé acts as a marketing tool when applying for jobs and allows potential employers to see a quick snapshot of your experience before deciding if they want to move forward with your application.
How do I build a résumé?
Building a résumé is as simple as opening a word processor and starting to type! There are plenty of templates available online if you would like a reference point to begin building your own. By following the format laid out below, you can build a résumé in no time.
How should I format my résumé?
At the top of the document should be your name (in large font size) and contact information. The following sections should all have a bold heading. First, the résumé objective where you will write a few sentences about the job you are applying for. Next comes your education, followed by work history, then any certifications, skills, volunteer work, and/or accomplishments that are relevant to the job. In total, the résumé should be 1-2 pages in length.
How do you format the sections of your résumé?
The sections of your résumé should be kept short and to the point. Education will include the name of the school, the degree received, year of graduation, and, for current students or recent graduates only, your GPA. Listing work history will include the job position and dates of employment, followed by a few bullet points listing your job duties. Make sure to write in past tense for previous jobs, and present tense for your current position. These bullets should begin with a verb and use the same format throughout. For example, “Manage a team of 20 people” or “Write and test code for computer applications.” Skills, certifications, and accomplishments can simply be listed as bullet points under a bold heading for each.
What skills and accomplishments should I include in my résumé?
Any skills and accomplishments should be relevant to the job you are applying for. Skills can include proficiency in certain computer software programs, language skills, and soft skills such as leadership or communication. Accomplishments can include being in the honors society or being a club official.
